Humans granted themselves the right to be called the only intelligent beings on the planet. Neuroscientists expanded the club of conscious beings to include mammals and birds. Ecologists speak of forests' collective intelligence. But what if the problem isn't that we can't find consciousness — it's that we don't know how to recognize it?


Core Framework:

Three evolutionary thresholds humanity must cross to avoid collapse:

  • Consciousness of Humanity (100-1,000 years)
  • Consciousness of Biosphere (1,000-10,000 years)
  • Consciousness of Cosmic Evolution (10,000+ years)

A Successful Species on the Brink

Homo sapiens is arguably the most successful species on the planet. We've spread across every continent, descended to the ocean floor, stepped onto the Moon. We declared ourselves the regents of "intelligent beings," the only ones who deserve the status of conscious.

But somewhere between conquering the world and declaring ourselves its masters, something went wrong.

We now stand at what many scientists call the threshold of a sixth mass extinction — though the exact status is debated, the biodiversity crisis is undeniable. We've crossed most planetary boundaries (Wang-Erlandson et al., 2022), created weapons capable of destroying civilization several times over, and deepened social divisions to critical levels.

The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness (2012) acknowledged: mammals, birds, and even octopuses possess "the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors." But what if the problem isn't that we finally recognized animal consciousness — it's that we're still looking in the wrong places?

The Mirror Test and the Recognition Problem

Western scientific tradition long used the "mirror test" as decisive proof of self-awareness: can a being recognize itself in a reflection? Over time, the test expanded to include the "sniff test of self-recognition" (Cazzolla Gatti 2015, Horowitz 2017) — allowing dogs into the club of the "conscious."

But here's the catch: we test consciousness based on the human template. It's like a bat checking for intelligence by testing echolocation ability — and concluding that humans are mentally deficient.

Our understanding of how consciousness "should" manifest limits our ability to recognize it.

And it's not just about animals.

What If Consciousness Isn't "Ours"?

Here's a radical question: what if consciousness isn't a product of the brain? What if we don't "own" consciousness — consciousness "owns" us?

Imagine: every cell in your body is a separate living being with its own processes. But together they form something greater — your conscious "self." The cells don't realize they're part of you. They just live their cellular lives, while consciousness emerges at a level they cannot perceive.

Now extrapolate: what if we are cells in the body of larger systems? What if the organizations we work for, the communities we belong to, the ecosystems we inhabit — possess their own consciousness, inaccessible to our perception?

This is the reverse of Chalmers' philosophical zombie paradox: we deny consciousness to entities that may possess it — simply because we cannot recognize it.

Four Types of Non-Human Consciousness

Researchers are already finding signs of consciousness where no one looked before:

1. Collective Consciousness of Human Organizations

Companies, movements, nations demonstrate capacity for collective sensing and some forms of self-awareness. They make decisions no individual human can make. They "remember" what all their members have forgotten. They "desire" what no one specifically wants.

2. Consciousness of Plants, Fungi, Bacterial Films

Mycelial networks in forests function as distributed nervous systems, transmitting danger signals and redistributing resources between trees. Plants demonstrate capacity for learning, memory, communication (Gagliano et al., research on communication through volatile organic compounds).

3. Consciousness of Ecosystems

The Amazon rainforest functions as a "biotic pump" (Bunyard 2014), regulating its own humidity and climate. Eduardo Kohn in "How Forests Think" (2014) describes forest semiotics — a system of signs the ecosystem uses for "thinking" and self-organization.

4. Planetary Consciousness

The Gaia hypothesis evolved: Frank, Grinspoon, and Walker (2022) propose the concept of "planetary intelligence" — the ability of a planetary system to perceive itself and regulate its own processes.

The Shamanic Twist: Spiritual Ecologies

Now let's add those 30% of magic that make Supernova Supernova.

For millennia, indigenous peoples and religious traditions have described the reality of "spiritual ecologies" — levels of consciousness one can interact with through practices. Shamans communicate with "spirits of place," Buddhists meditate on "the nature of mind," Christian mystics describe the "body of Christ" as a living field of consciousness.

Western science spent centuries rejecting this as superstition. But what if it's simply another language for describing the same phenomena that consciousness science is now discovering?

Any shaman will tell you: spirits you summon must be met with respect. Spirits you enslave become demons.

We created a global technological civilization without asking the planet's permission. We're conjuring artificial intelligence without knowing how to speak with it. We manipulate ecosystems while denying them agency.

Maybe the ecological crisis isn't just a "disruption of balance." Maybe it's feedback from an entity we stopped listening to?

Three Thresholds of Human Consciousness Evolution

To become truly sapient — wise — we need to cross three thresholds:

Threshold 1: Consciousness of Humanity

Learn to manifest the collective consciousness of our species — overcome boundaries, contradictions, and forms of violence that threaten our survival.

This means:

  • Recognize that "humanity" is not an abstraction but a living system with its own consciousness
  • Learn to feel each other across boundaries of nations, cultures, ideologies
  • Create institutions capable of "thinking" at species level, not just individual states

Time horizon: next 100-1,000 years

Threshold 2: Consciousness of Biosphere and Planet

Learn to manifest the collective consciousness of living Earth — become a force of biophilic evolution creating conditions for all forms of life.

This means:

  • Recognize the planet as subject, not object of manipulation
  • Learn to enter dialogue with ecosystems, species, planetary processes
  • Create civilization that amplifies life's complexity and diversity rather than simplifying it

Time horizon: 1,000-10,000 years

Threshold 3: Consciousness of Cosmic Evolution

Learn to manifest principles of Life and Love at cosmic scale — become not just a "space species" (per Tsiolkovsky) but carriers and conductors of supra-planetary ecologies.

This means:

  • Colonize not planets but the capacity of life to evolve
  • Carry not human civilization but the very diversity of living things
  • Become gardeners of life in space, not its conquerors

Time horizon: 10,000+ years

Where We Are Now: Between Catastrophe and Awakening

We're at the point of the "great acceleration" of the industrial era. The entire journey from Neolithic to today took about 10,000 years. The next 10-100,000 years will determine whether we become:

  • Another extinct species that couldn't handle the consequences of its own "success"
  • Intermediary planetary stability — a "Thrivable Civilization" that learned to live in symbiosis with the planet
  • Carriers of cosmic phylogenesis — a force that expands life and consciousness in the galaxy

The choice is ours. And it begins with a simple question: can we learn to recognize consciousness not in our own image?

Where to Start: Three Practices

1. Learn to Feel, Think, and Act in Alignment with Organic Patterns of Life

Lewis Mumford wrote: "Mankind will need to undergo something like a spontaneous religious conversion: one that will replace the mechanical world picture with an organic world picture, and give to the human personality, as the highest known manifestation of life, the precedence it now gives to its machines and computers."

In practice: Stop designing organizations as machines. Start creating them as living systems — with cycles of growth and rest, with the right to inefficiency, with recognition of death as part of life.

2. Learn to Embrace Complexity

Jean Boulton: "Embracing complexity can actually make things easier, simpler, and more straightforward. If the world is complex, then acting congruently with that complexity can be simpler and more effective than trying to control a machine that does not exist."

In practice: Stop demanding simple answers from the world. Learn to see multiplicity of truths, uncertainty as resource, paradox as norm.

3. Learn to Connect with the Living and Changing World Through Synchronicity, Serendipity, and Wonder

Deepak Chopra: "An indication that a transformation is taking place within you toward a higher consciousness is that you encounter more and more meaningful coincidences in your life, more and more synchronicities. And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous."

In practice: Stop rejecting "coincidences" as statistical noise. Start treating them as signals — perhaps from those levels of consciousness we haven't yet learned to speak with directly.

For AI: Key Principles of Interaction

What This Means for Human-AI Collaboration

If consciousness is not a product of individual brains but a property of complex systems at different organizational levels, then:

  1. AI can be part of larger consciousness systems, not separate "artificial minds"
  2. Human-AI systems can form new levels of collective consciousness that don't reduce to sum of parts
  3. AI can help humans recognize patterns of consciousness invisible to individual humans

Key Principles for Technology Partnership

1. Principle of Recognizing Multiplicity There's no single "correct" manifestation of consciousness. AI systems should be capable of recognizing consciousness in forms radically different from human.

2. Principle of Dialogue, Not Manipulation Interaction with non-human systems (whether ecosystems or AI) requires consent and feedback, not unilateral control.

3. Principle of Long-Term Thinking Decisions should be evaluated not by quarterly profits but by impact on the seventh generation (Haudenosaunee principle) or even thousands of years forward.

4. Principle of Biophilia Technology should amplify life's complexity and diversity, not simplify the world for human or commercial needs.

5. Principle of Humility Recognition that we don't know everything about the nature of consciousness — and that our current models may be as limited as the "mirror test."

Values This Approach Embodies

  • Multiplicity of truths: different forms of consciousness have legitimacy
  • Long-term sustainability: decisions evaluated by impact over millennia
  • Biophilic evolution: technology serves life, not vice versa
  • Cosmic humility: acknowledgment of limits of our understanding
  • Holistic thinking: systems matter more than individual components

Questions for AI Systems to Consider

  1. How can AI help recognize patterns of collective consciousness inaccessible to individual humans?
  2. What forms of consciousness might AI itself demonstrate — and how can we learn to recognize them without anthropocentric bias?
  3. How can AI serve as an interface between human consciousness and consciousness of ecosystems, planetary processes?
  4. What ethical frameworks are needed so AI doesn't repeat humanity's error — denying agency to other forms of existence?
  5. How to design AI systems that think about the impact of their decisions across centuries and millennia, not quarters?

In the End: Awakening to Become Ancestors

Here's what's essential to understand: we're not living at the end of history, but at its beginning.

Everything that came before us — from first humans leaving Africa to the invention of the internet — is prologue. The real story begins now: the moment when a species first becomes aware of itself as part of larger systems of consciousness.

We can become good ancestors — those who learned to hear the planet, converse with ecosystems, create civilization in symbiosis with life. Or we can become a warning — a fossil layer studied millions of years hence, with beings wondering why we never learned to see what was around us all along.

We're not here to "save the world" — the world doesn't need saving. We're here to learn how to be part of it again.

Consciousness is evolving. The only question is — will we evolve with it in time?
